Alfons Alt

Born in 1962 in Germany, Alfons Alt settled in France in 1985. He worked and learned about the old photography techniques, firstly with Jean-Pierre and Claudine Sudre, and then with Jordi Guillumet in Barcelona. His personal work resulting from all those inspirations is called « Altotype ». This photographer is therefore an “Altotypiste”, always looking for specific lights: he explores, as a tightrope walker, the possible equilibrium that allows the pigments to honour his photographs.

Each print is a one-off. The photographic process is using pigments rather than the technique of silver gelatin. All the different steps call on various techniques. Alfons Alt chooses its subjects behind his camera with dedication and then, works on the prints as either a chemist, an engraver or a painter, using different types of mount: canvas, paper, wood, porcelain, glass, copper, zinc… His daily practice of the artisanal photography is recognised in many countries.

His interventions are popular in contemporary architecture, and are requested for both inside and outside projects, within Europe and more precisely in France and Germany. B.G.
